Everyday I am reminded of the fact that the body positive movement is here to stay, and it should be since it is an exercise in self love and acceptance. The latest event where I witnessed that was on March 10th, 2019, at the He Loves Curves Fashion Show in Cleveland, Ohio.
He Loves Curves is a shopping boutique on the East side of Cleveland that caters to the plus size fashionista, but the owner Charkia Campbell is well known around the city not just for keeping curvy ladies fly and fabulous, but also for showcasing an eclectic mix of real women and models, local designers, vendors and talent that come together for her annual runway show.
Even upon arrival I could tell that this was this was the place to be because guests were arriving almost two hours early to get a non- VIP seat inside the spacious Red Space loft. However, all that extra time was not wasted after securing your seat, there were plenty of opportunities to network and mingle with Cleveland's enthusiastic fashion crowd of who's who, along the close knit family of models, designers, makeup artists, hairstylists and vendors. Some guests opted to sit and munch on the available goodies like nachos and cheese and wing ding dinners, or sipped their wine while waiting for the show to start.
The show opened with a high energy dance routine by the models, led by Charkia and helped set the tone for how the rest of the show would flow- fast paced, upbeat and full of blink and you missed it moments that had the crowd standing on their feet!
The first scene opened up with several looks from the He Loves Curves Boutique and seeing women of various sizes rocking the trendiest, boldest, most daring outfits while strutting, dancing and owning the runway had the crowd going wild with excitement!
The show was lively and energetic throughout the whole night with scenes by local designers and boutiques that included a mix of menswear, sportswear, couture, vintage and street style fashion. There were local performers that kept the crowd moving in between scenes and the hosts KiKi and Ms. Vee along with DJ Lo-Key definitely kept the crowd lit with giveaways, dance offs and shout outs.
What I loved most was the sense of pride that radiated off the ladies (and some gentlemen) that were in the show. You felt it as they flaunted their fashions to the thunderous claps on the runway, as they sashayed to the beat of the music and when they twirled for the audience and themselves before stepping off the runway. The whole show was one of those "You had to be there moments" that you can only appreciate when you are actually there to witness it.
I also liked the fact that the show itself was dedicated to cancer awareness and that some of the proceeds went directly to those affected by the disease to allow them to pay for treatments, medicine and any thing else that could be handled. It proved that communities and business owners can come together to have a great time, celebrate each other and raise money to help each other out.
Have you ever been to a He Loves Curves Fashion Show? Tell me about your experience in the comments below! Also, if you hear of any upcoming fashion events that I could cover for the blog, please let me know!
