September 5th, is officially the start of New York Fashion Week, followed by London, Milan and finally Paris, rounding off what is now known as Fashion Month. Individual cities also celebrate local designers by hosting independent fashion weeks, but unfortunately Cleveland does not have one. However, if you have been following my blog, then you already know I'm not one to cry over spilled milk and I love to take matters into my own hands- so I decided to host my own Fashion Month (read here and here for previous attempts) creating and attending my own events while adding a fashion and style challenge in the mix. Keep reading if you want to participate!
It has been unseasonably "warm" here in Cleveland, Ohio, and at the time of this post, we haven't even gotten any snow yet! Here we are in January and while there is still no snow- the hawk is out! The week long show case of American fashions set the blueprint for Fashion Week as we know it today, but so many things have changed since then- starting with the move from Bryant Park, the influx of celebrity designers and the designer as celebrity, boring legacy houses that dominate media based on name alone who only design according to what sells, and the blatant erasure of black designers, media and models- all made me lose interest. However this season was a little different...
I have loved fashion since I was a young girl and it has had a huge impact on the way I think, move and function in my everyday life even to this day. I am a fan of the industry and everything that comes with it- the designers, the clothes, the models and the movements that got us here. When I think back to what really got me involved and wanting to be in this industry, there were several standout moments that got me here. And I want to share them with you here...
