90's television was so inspirational. Style wise at least, and one of my faves was Lisa Turtle- played by Lark Voorhies on Saved by the Bell- the fashionista of the group of high school misfits at California's fictional Bayside High. Lisa was also seen rocking the most girly, stylish outfits that included florals, animal prints and bright colors that are on trend today and her looks were never too over the top or too revealing (mainly because Voorhies was a stout Jehovah's Witness) With all the Hollywood remakes out now, I started wondering how would Lisa dress if the show were remade today? She would still be a trendsetter no doubt, but in today's constantly sexed up society I believe her look would be a little more on edge and a bit more Instagram ready.
1. To update the first look I used a dark floral mini dress and denim jacket to take the place of that off the shoulder, sweetheart neckline, denim bodice and floral arm puff/ruffle skirt that is sweet as Truvia but had too many style elements going on at once. Add a pair of fringe sandals for a casual cool look that is totally Turtle.
2. Lisa's leopard print mini dress, belt and oversize bomber jacket are bomb no lie- so I just tightened up the silhouette with a two piece leopard print crop top and skirt set and a form fitting black and white bomber. The red Micheal Jackson style booties with the black contrast trim just adds a little more excitement and drama to the whole look.
3. The final look is simple, and anything but basic with Lisa rocking an embellished black t- shirt, animal print belt and a pair of red jeans. I used a plain black tee and red jeans to make the outfit current, but added the bold accessories to make this look pop. A gold chain, red and gold bangles and two different animal printed tote bag and zebra flats. Style level elevated!
What would you put Lisa Turtle in if her character was re-imagined for today? What other stylish fictional television star would you like to see a character study of?
Michelle Obama looked amazing rocking her custum Jason Wu frock at last night's state dinner for Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau! The floor length midnight blue dress featured the same floral design and jaquard material as the shorter versions seen on Wu's fall 2016 runway, but was specially made into the strapless asymetrical model you see above.
I love how she let her dress and hair shine- no gaudy accessories needed. When it comes to a maxi dress of any type, less is more when dealing with jewelry and other accessories as Mrs. Obama proves! What do you think of Michelle Obama's look? Haute or Not?
Not only is bad gal RiRi on the cover of British Vogue's April issue that drops next Thursday, but it was also announced that the star is dropping a limited edition capsule collection with beloved shoe designer Manolo Blahnik! The denim covered sandals, pumps, booties and thigh highs are embellished with sequins and embroidery that are inspired by the singer's hand tattoos and will range in price from $767 to $3500. The shoes will be available in Manolo Blahnik stores in Hong Kong, New York and London on May 5th.
Excited about the collection, Rihanna said in a press release: “The day I see a woman in the street wearing my shoes... I am sorry for that woman because I’m going to literally run after her, shouting, ‘Stop! Selfie! Who are you? Where did you get them?’ I’m going to have a moment!”
This limited edition collection with Blahnik is right on the heels of her design partnership with German sneaker brand Puma- the Fenty X Puma collection she showed at NYFW last month, and shortly after it was revealed that Rihanna is the most marketable celebrity. It's not hard to tell from successful collaborations with brands like Dior, Armani, Stance, River Island, MAC and others- music, fashion, beauty and now footwear, that Rihanna reign just won't let up for real lol.
WEEKLY FASHION NEWS RECAP: 2/22-2/29 TOMMY HILFIGER'S NEW KIDS LINE, ANTM REBOOT, RACHEL ZOE'S BOUTIQUE AND AJAK DENG COMES OUT OF RETIREMENT + FEBRUARY MONTHLY FASHION NEWS RECAP
Work Work Work Work Work Tommy: It's true that I haven't payed any attention to the Tommy Hilfiger brand since the days of our beloved Aaliyah rockin Tommy Girl back in the late '90s, but last week it was announced that Hilfiger would launch an adaptive/inclusive clothing line for disabled kids and the news made me smile. The collection will look and cost the same as his existing children's line, but the pieces have been modified for kids with limited reach and mobile disabilities that will include magnets instead of buttons and zippers, adjustable waistbands and different sleeve and pants lengths with different ways to put the clothes on. I think it's awesome and about time a mainstream designer looked out, and I'm sure more will follow... Tommy is still not on my radar, but he did help Rihanna slay in that slinky RBG net dress and crochet bikini in her video for "Work" so maybe I will start looking a bit more closely lol.
Still on Top: America's Next Top Model is back like it never left (the CW cancelled it last December) and the new season will air on VH1 (no word yet on the air date) with a new panel of judges. Supermodel and entrepreneur Tyra Banks will not return as the host but will be producing, so don't worry- we will probably still see bald headed models smizing across a body of water on roller blades while bedazzled tarantulas crawl on their faces lol.
Zoe Fabulous: Stylist Rachel Zoe, who introduced us to boho luxe and chunky jewelry back in the early 2000's, is set to open her first brick and mortar boutique- a pop up shop at the Grove shopping center in Los Angeles that will be open until March 31st. She plans to find a permanent space and will continue to expand her brand which includes her e-commerce site, RachelZoe.com, the Rachel Zoe fashion line and she is now the creative director of Hudson BLVD Group, a portfolio of specialty beauty service brands that include a makeup salon, a hair removal salon and her own DreamDry blowout salon. Gotta respect her hustle!
Can't Stop, Won't Stop: Gorgeous Australian model Ajak Deng retired from modeling for exactly one week and then was like, "SIKE!" Deng, who was discovered in 2008 has walked for major brands like Lanvin, Valentino, Louis Vuitton, and Givenchy and has starred in campaigns for MAC, United Colors of Benetton and Calvin Klein, decided that she had had enough of the racism and the disrespect that runs rampant in an industry that largely under uses darker skinned models. She had been very vocal about her displeasure and announced that she was moving back to Australia to resume life without modeling. But one week later Deng announced via Instagram that she was back in business writing, "Yeah sure, giving up is easier, but who will fight the war that we are so in denial about?" Chu'uch!!

11/15/16 *This post has been updated to congratulate Naomi Campbell's recent Model of the Century win at the German GQ Men's Awards for her influence in the fashion industry spanning over three decades. The 46 year old super model has been modeling since she was fifteen and does not look to be slowing down at any time. She was/is a favorite of designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Azzadine Alaia and Gianni Versace, starred in a few movies and TV shows including the more recent Empire, and she had her own reality show called The Face. We won't even discuss her signature walk and how she can take absolute control over any photo, whether dressed in couture, a candid shot or even a selfie...Who is more deserving of such an award but Miss Campbell? NOBODY!
If you know anything about me, you know that I live for all things Naomi Campbell- nasty attitude and violent nature be damned lol! I personally feel like Miss Campbell is a living legend, and not for nothing seeing as though she was THE first black super model, the first black model to grace the cover of French Vogue, British Vogue and Time magazine- she also co-wrote a book called Swan, recorded an album- BabyWoman, starred in Bob Marley, Micheal Jackson and George Micheal videos and of course numerous high fashion and urban ad campaigns- remember this?
One of my favorite editorials starring Naomi is "Wild Things" shot by French photographer Jean Paul Goude (infamous for his 1980's work with Grace Jones and for helping Kim Kardashian break the internet) for Harper's Bazaar September 2009 issue. Seeing her jump rope with monkeys, wrestling with a crocodile and riding an elephant is cool for sure, but the image that takes my breath away is seeing Naomi run with the cheetah! Chiiiile!!
Rocking a high ponytail and a Blumarine dress Naomi goes head to foot with that cheetah and all you see is bravery, fearlessness, body and grace in motion. Kinetic and potential energy is life and that is what Naomi gives every time I glance at this photo...
I have also included a handful of my favorite editorials, covers, runway shots and candid photos of Naomi over the years. Obviously I don't own any of these photos that I "retrieved" from Google and Pinterest (not a one lol) and I don't want any problems so I will gladly remove them if asked. But until then, they fa' errbody to enjoy!
