I have loved fashion since I was a young girl and it has had a huge impact on the way I think, move and function in my everyday life even to this day. I am a fan of the industry and everything that comes with it- the designers, the clothes, the models and the movements that got us here. When I think back to what really got me involved and wanting to be in this industry, there were several standout moments that got me here. And I want to share them with you here...

When we talk about television characters with style in the 90's, you just can't have a conversation without mentioning Pamela James of the 1993 sitcom "Martin". James, or "Pam" as she was known- played by actress Tichina Arnold- did not hold back on the tongue lashing and roasting sessions she got into with the show's title character Martin Payne, played by comedian Martin Lawrence. She also did not hold back on her style choices either. Her best friend and Martin's girlfriend Gina, played by Tisha Campbell, was downright conservative in her classic primary colored blazers and skirt suits whereas Pam made sure she was both seen and heard in loud form fitting body con dresses, hip plaid swing skirts and chain belts, ruffled blouses and she kept us guessing what next week's hairstyle would be- French rolls, ponytails, updoes, braids and more. Nobody was flyer than Pamela James! Her wardrobe was on point throughout the whole series and she was the epitome of 90's ghetto fabulousness, so how would I style her character today? Read on to find out:
1. The first outfit looks deceivingly simple, but it's the details that make it stand out. Pam's dark skin looks good in many different colors including a silky Kelly green blouse with a deep plunge and a slit in the back and is sexy enough without being too over the top. Paired with a black leather skirt and accessorized with button sized statement earrings that say "Nope", a stack of plastic black bracelets, a Gucci clutch and a pair of no nonsense maroon pumps, Pam is ready for whatever! 2. The second outfit is perfect for a semi casual brunch date with the homegirl Gina. Ruffle shirts were all the rage in the 90's and this white cropped version brings the look up to date when paired with distressed boyfriend jeans, a Chanel chain belt, some Gucci cat eye frames, an Apple watch, a sassy shoulder bag and white pumps. WERK PAMELA!! 3. The last outfit is definitely a club look for Pam! Ms. James had body-oddy-oddy for days and was not afraid to show it off! This multi colored baroque Kenzo dress would have sent her lover Tommy running after her for sure, especially when worn with a dark purple lip, gold Gucci horse-bit earrings, a gold Saint Laurent clutch and a velvet crisscross sandals by Rossi. Yes, under my direction I would make Pam a soft label whore meaning she would not be wearing the whole collection of the current season, but I would do a high low mix of designer, boutique and big box store styles and accessories with vintage finds, and consignment shop treasures. Pam is high fashion, but she's not a slave to it and will not hesitate to pick up a gaudy bauble ring she spots in the beauty supply store in her old hood when she stops through for some edge control lol. Rihanna was spotted strolling the streets of Sweden a few days ago in this yellow floral ruffle trim Vetements Spring 2016 dress while on her Anti World Tour. The 28 year old singer has been a fan of the Parisian design collective fronted by Demna Gvasalia (also appointed as creative director at Balenciaga) since they exploded onto the scene in 2014 and has worn several of their pieces. She styled it up with a pair of black Prada block heel boots from Spring 2015. Y'all already know I stan for Rihanna and feel there is very little that doesn't look good on her- which is why she is a designer favorite- but this is not my favorite look on her. I like how she kept the rest of her look simple- high bun, barely there makeup and small studs. Hell with the loud color, the print, the ruffle, the collar, the bow tie and the long trumpet sleeves she didn't have room for anything else lol! The dress will set you back $1,985 and the shoes another $1590, which ya'll know she didn't pay lol. But if she did, was it worth it- is her look haute or not? Vote below and then see the look I tried to recreate for less! 90's nostalgia is everywhere today and within the last decade or so streetwear has become a very well respected fashion subculture and taken so seriously that it's hard to remember a time when it was laughed at or looked down on. Now we see designers like Alexander Wang and others sending down runway looks that were exclusively "inspired" by the hip hop culture and all the ghetto fabulousness that comes with it. Rapper, actor and street philosopher, Tupac Shakur- who would have been 45 years old today- was a trendsetter who brought street wear and high fashion together in a way that only he could. Just like his music balanced and blurred the lines of political statements, hood reports, materialism, education and all round wildin out- he did the same for high fashion and street wear. Made it for us but understood by everybody with an open mind. This is why we didn't bat an eye when Eminem wore his bandannas or when Yeezy declared himself "the Louis Vuitton Don". We don't mind that our R&B singers who grew up in the nineties are more tatted up with thug life running through their veins than some of the most popular rappers out now. For better or worse, leather joggers are a thing because of 'Pac and here are a few other trends that he started...
They tried to kill him back in 1996, but the spirit of Tupac Shakur will forever live on through his music, his quotes, his movies, his dedicated fans and his trendsetting style. What is your favorite Tupac trend? Let me know in the comments below!
Model Winnie Harlow was in attendance for the launch of the Magnum London pop up store. The leggy former America's Next Top Model contestant was cute and chic in a dark denim cut out Fendi dress. She polished the look off with a bright red clutch and a pair of navy embellished chunky heel sandals with thick laces also by Fendi.
Honestly, I am not a fan of those shoes but I loved this simple look! It's perfect for a summer ice cream social or any other casual gathering when you want to give just enough glam for the people lol. is Winnie's outfit Haute or Not? Now yes, it's true that that dress will cost close to $1200, and the mink fur trimmed Flowerland sandals gonna run you about $1,015, but I found a similar look for less down below. And even if you are not feeling the whole outfit- a denim dress is a great investment because it is very similar to a LBD in which it can be dressed up or down and styled so many different ways just by changing accessories and shoes.
DVb Victoria Beckham loose dress, $260 / Lace up sandals, $54 / Yves Saint Laurent purse crossbody, $1,070 / ABS by Allen Schwartz hinged bracelet / Capwell Co earrings jewelry, $36 / Druzy jewelry / Jaeger statement ring, $51 / Mac cosmetic / Smashbox lipstick
Badgirl Riri and Dior are back at it again! The Bajan powerhouse and the French fashion house have collaborated for the second time- this time on a collection of futuristic sunglasses. Though the brand is still without a designer (Raf Simmons has not yet been replaced) Rihanna is the first ambassador ever to hold a design position and was entirely hands on with the process choosing materials, lenses and colors among other things. In a statement provided by Dior via WWD the singer admits to being inspired by La Forge from "Star Trek" “I’ve always been obsessed with his eyewear, and when I got to Dior and saw all the materials I could play with, it all just came together,” she said. The results are definitely Rihanna style- so much so that the collection has been named 'Rihanna'. Sold exclusively at Dior stores beginning in June, there is one frame available with six color variations: silver, green, pink and blue and will retail for $840 while the 24 karat gold plated version will go for $1,950...#bitchbettahavemymoney or I'll never afford a pair lol. But if you find yourself trying to work work work work work so you can throw gold plated shade like Riri and come up short- no worries, maybe you can afford a pair of heels or boots from her Manolo Blahnik capsule- no no Manolo? Well there is her Fenty ready to wear collection and shoes, or spritz one of her fragrances on- oh and don't forget the socks collaboration with Stance, and the makeup line that is coming soon... I mean dang- can your favorite sell music, fashion, beauty, style aaand socks? Lol... Peep the slideshow below for a closer look at Rihanna's frames. |
