Whitney Houston, the greatest voice of all time passed two years ago today and I along with other fans still mourn her death. No matter how she died, she will always be remembered for her beautiful voice! But many did not know that the 5'8 fresh faced beauty started her career off as a model at age 16 and was a regular cover star (and the first black model) for Seventeen magazine back when she was high school- highly saught after for her "girl next door" vibes. Houston was also featured in Glamour, Cosmopolitan, and Mademoiselle after being signed to the very prestigous Wilhemina Models agency. I believe she would have had a great career as a model, if she had not signed her record deal with Clive Davis when she was 19... Who knows?

Beyonce, Mary J, Lil Kim and countless black women of all skin tones and tax brackets have rocked blonde hair at some point in their lifetime, but who was one of the first to pioneer the look? That would be 50's "Queen of the Blues" singer Dinah Washington! The jazz/blues singer had many different styles of music and men (married 8 times take that J.Lo!) and loved to switch her 'do up too. Washington struck gold when she used a spray formula to color her black hair a dark blonde color, and the look was a striking change to the way she usually styled her bouffants, fans loved it and she paved the way for black women and our faves to rock honey blonde to platinum blonde with confidence!
